A co-worker of mine introduced me to Snoqualmie Falls Brewing Company, a small brewery and taproom located in historic downtown Snoqualmie, Washington. My parents recently came up for a visit and I took them to the taproom to try out the food and taste test some of the brews. Needless to say, we made the right choice. The food was delicious and the beer was so good, we bought a few 22 oz bottles to take home.
Snoqualmie Falls Brewing Company was founded in 1997 by Pat Anderson, David McKibben, Dave Eiffert, LeRoy Gmazel and Tom Antone. Pat formulated the original beers and each initial batch was brewed by David with Pat’s assistance.
In 1998, former head of Thomas Kemper and Pyramid, Rande Reed, became head brewer. Today, Rande is assisted by Kevin Gesell and Lloyd Hopes. The Taproom opened in 2006, and was remodeled and expanded in 2011. In 2013, partner Dave Eiffert took over as General Manager. In 2013, John and Denise Snow came in as co-owners.
I had the chance to speak with Dave Eiffert and Taproom Manager, Stacy Jones before I took a quick tour of the brewery.
Why open a brewery in Snoqualmie? Dave believes it takes a generation before new residents feel a part of a small town. Three of the founders grew up in the valley and Dave had lived in the area for 15 years. Pat Anderson was the city attorney and his office was across the street from the brewery location. Both Pat and Dave had been home brewers before they decided to partner. The brewery location was the perfect place to start a business so they decided to go all in.
Upon opening the brewery, Dave said they wanted to carry a full spectrum of beers, one in each major style. They also wanted to carry special and seasonal beers, such as a light, refreshing summer beer with less alcohol and a darker and richer winter warmer beer in the colder months. They create three special beers per year and if they sell well, they will bring them back the next year. The brewery also uses local ingredients for their brews, including hops picked straight from Dave’s yard! Meadowbrook Farm Preserve also supplies hops for the brewery, and used to be the biggest grower of hops in the world.
I asked Dave his thoughts about the rise of microbreweries over the last decade. Dave believes that the American public’s tastes are shifting, like the shift towards more organic products, people want quality and locally produced goods.
The brewery also works with local area charities including those that provide services for children such as local jazz for kids and baseball clubs. They have donated to The Center for Wooden Boats, breast cancer charities, and local organic farms. They also work with Washington Wild, because beer is made with good water and quality water comes from clean watersheds.
We may have went overboard on the beer sampling, but between the four of us, we sampled EVERYTHING, including two specials, Harvest Moon and a Double Brown Ale. A single sampler is $1.50 and a specialty sampler is $2.00. My favorite ended up being the Harvest Moon, which is available September and October and is a German-style Festbier made with highly kilned Munich malt, German Spalt hops and their house ale yeast. I also loved the Nitro Pale Ale, which is the Copperhead Pale Ale infused with nitrogen, which made it incredibly smooth and creamy. My husband enjoyed the Wildcat IPA, which is made with Pale, Munich, Cara-Pils and Crystal malts and top-fermenting ale yeast. My dad savored the Perfectly Great Amber (PGA). My mom loved the Little Si Kolsch, which is brewed in a style unique to Cologne, made with a Pale Malt, wheat and German Spalt hops.
I highly recommend checking out the Taproom for lunch or dinner as well. I tried the Parkway BLT, made with house chipotle mayo, pepper bacon (I could have order just the bacon, it was DELICIOUS!), lettuce, tomato and avocado on toasted marble rye.
My mom ordered the Muffaletta, made with house olive tapenade, capicolla, smoked turkey, pepperoni, provolone, roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, red onion and balsamic vinaigrette on focaccia bread. The Muffaletta is served with a house veggie skewer and a side of mixed greens tossed in a house blood orange vinaigrette.
My dad order The Local, made with garlic herb butter, roast beef, Swiss and caramelized onions toasted on dutch crunch with a side of au jus.
My husband ordered a pepperoni pizza. We all loved everything we ordered and will definitely be coming again.
