If you’re sick mundane holiday entertainment, like me, look no further than the Triple Door’s newest show, The Land of the Sweets, A Burlesque Nutcracker.

The show itself is more burlesque than nutcracker, but it does have an intoxicating holiday feel. Structured like an old 1950s T.V. special, a sequin-clad MC leads the audience through the burlesque version of the Land of the Sweets. He’s assisted by three adorable little Tinkerbell-like “snowflakes.” Their energy kept the audience upbeat and entertained between performances. If you’re unfamiliar with the Nutcracker, the land of the sweets is a dream land ruled by the sugar plum fairy and has a series of dances. The show honors these dances with a fun play on burlesque, making it the kind of idea you’d think about after reading through adult party themes, or even an afterparty for the show itself. Regardless, it also pulls other elements and characters from the ballet and uses them to enhance and create the story.

The dance numbers themselves range for solos, duets, and group dances and utilize contemporary, tap, and ballet. As each dance progresses, the performers lose a little more clothing. While there were sultry parts of the dances, the overall feeling of the show was light hearted, fun and of course, nipple free. For those who thought it would be the kind of night that a pocket pussy would be fitting for, this could be a disappointment. But then, they can surely entertain themselves after the show.

The venue, The Triple Door, feels like a restaurant that specializes in entertainment. The tables have a private, intimate feeling, and the food is spectacular. Seattle’s own, Wild Ginger, an Asian fusion restaurant, helped create the menu. We ordered multiple small dishes, appetizers, and a few main courses, and each one, while traditional to different countries, mixed well together.

The Land of the Sweets: A Burlesque Nutcracker is running at The Triple Door, until December 29. So hurry up and don’t miss the fun. Peace, love, and glamor.
