The opening of a new coffee shop in Seattle likely doesn’t even blip on the radar anymore. As a region, we are known for many things, beautiful mountains, iconic musicians, our tech and start-up culture, plus well-branded northwest caffeinated lifestyles.
So unless it is something new, different or a little quirky – it may just pass us by.
Welcome the Bulletproof Café. This is the third location in the nation and is located in the middle of the booming South Lake Union area in Seattle. What’s Up NW checked it out by attending the grand opening and picking up a buttery cup o’ joe.
A quick flashback to 2015 – we had dropped in on the first Bulletproof Café in Santa Monica, California – three days after it opened. Having just wrapped up a volunteer gig at the CrossFit Games and as a devoted Bulletproof fan, we wanted to see if the coffee we made each morning was on par with a ‘professionally built’ cup of Bulletproof Coffee (it was). In our opinion, it was also a bit of a mystery that a Bulletproof Coffee Café had not opened in the northwest until now, seeing that a caffeinated mindset is equal to not carrying an umbrella in the Emerald City, but there were a few places where one could enjoy a cup of Bulletproof Coffee in the Seattle area if you did your research.
That changed when Dave Asprey, founder and CEO of Bulletproof, officially opened the doors with a swing of a samurai sword (instead of the standard scissors) to cut the ribbon.
After thanking everyone for coming, including his parents who were in attendance, he explained the hopes he has for the Seattle location: “I want people, who have never heard of Bulletproof Coffee to walk by and think, ‘I’ll try that’ and after they see how they feel, inspire them to say ‘what else can I do to have this level of energy’ and they start making the little changes through their life. This is just a way of igniting the spark. It is our birthright to have tons of energy and to feel good, it is not supposed to be a struggle – that’s why we opened this.”
Asprey, who has been featured in many publications, including The Guardian, The New York Times, Fortune and is a best-selling author, including the New York Times best sellers, Head Strong and The Bulletproof Diet. You can also check out the Bulletproof Blog and Asprey’s Bulletproof Radio Podcast should you need more information.
The café is cozy and efficient. It is not an expansive place, but comfortable. On sunny days, the doors accordion open to let in the sun (always a good thing) The shelves are stocked with everything from the Bulletproof product line, and the menu offers all the variants of Bulletproof, that starts with clean coffee, with add-ins such as Bulletproof brand Collagen Protein and Cacao. There are additional non-coffee menu items, such as bone broth and Bulletproof Ice Cream (which our companion had to sample) There is even a Bulletproof Vibe to try.
The Seattle Bulletproof Café is located at: 307 Westlake Ave. N. Hours are 6:00am to 7:00pm Monday through Friday and 7:00am to 4:00pm on the weekends. You can also connect to it via the SLU Streetcar.
