The evening was dark and the rain was coming down. The windshield wipers tried their best to keep up but sometimes, it was to no avail. At times, the traffic was at a standstill. Yes, it was a typical fall evening in the greater Seattle area on the roads, but the destination would be nothing but typical. With patience wearing thin and my GPS constantly insisting that I was “still on the fastest route,” my friend Annie and I finally saw the signs. We had finally made it to Marymoor Park. We finally made it to the century old Spiegeltent. Teatro ZinZanni’s Love, Chaos & Dinner was waiting!
Running through the rain in an attempt to save our hair, Annie and I entered the opulent tent in awe. An exquisite chandelier, a gift shop filled with diamond-encrusted tiaras and lavish masks stood before us. Guests dressed in boas and fancy hats milled about, sipping on champagne and other cocktails, waiting for the doors to open. The rain outside constantly pelted the tent and I felt like we had stepped back in time to France in the early 1900’s, anxiously awaiting a performance at the Moulin Rouge.
Annie and I ordered mojitos from the bar and took in all the sights and sounds. When the doors opened for dinner and showtime, we were in awe by the twenty-nine foot tall tent and velvet walls! No detailed was spared and we sat down at our table, eagerly awaiting all the evening would bring. Knowing Teatro ZinZanni had partnered with Seattle-based Chef Jason Wilson, my stomach growled with anticipation. Waiting for us at the table was Fresh Ricotta Cheese And Roasted Pumpkin Crostini With Lemon – Kale Pesto And Crispy Sage. As the evening progressed we also had a Creamy White Bean and Rosemary Soup, Braised Beef Short Rib with Cabernet Demi-Glace and Chocolate Cake for dessert! Hello heaven on the taste buds!
The lights dimmed and the show began.
It’s opening night of the new Teatro ZinZanni, and the staff anxiously awaits the arrival of a world-renowned restaurant critic. They are trying to put their best foot forward, without stepping on each others toes! Getting swept up in the madness is the magical Maître d’, who has staffed his restaurant with mechanical waitresses, chefs that defy gravity, and an amorous busboy who has finally met his match. With an aim to impress, the crew literally bends over backwards to give this critic the experience of a lifetime.
Along with the menu, the entire show was a feast for all the senses. The costumes, the singing, the dancing – the laughter, oh the laughter! Canadian Joe De Paul may be small in stature, but he is larger than life performer. The Austrian Amazon, Manuela Horn is absolutely hilarious. I was lucky enough to have the magical Maître d’, Ukrainian-born illusionist, Yevgeniy Voronin, perform a magic trick using my dress, leaving me a beautiful love note after.
The entire cast of Love, Chaos & Dinner were unbelievably stunning! The core physical strength shown by French-artist Domitil Aillot, Russian-performer Svetlana, Ukrainian rhythmic gymnast Elena Gatilova and Duo Madrona was mind-boggling. Ariana Savalas’ voice and costumes were nothing short of beautifully mesmerizing. The talent in this show is absolutely impeccable.
Annie and I were lucky enough to be sitting at the same table as Reenie Duff, the associate artistic director and producer of Teatro ZinZanni. She is clearly loved by the cast, as she was greeted by them during each of the four intermissions and after the show concluded. You could tell she is just one of those beautiful souls that everyone should have in their life!
