September is fashion month around the world – from New York to Paris and beyond. Seattle’s, Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) is celebrating fashion this September with a dedicated month of special events and shopping opportunities. Enjoy the fun and explore our community’s fashion story with a visit to MOHAI’s exhibit Seattle Style: Fashion/Function.
These programs and events showcase the complex history of clothing in the Puget Sound including its influence, and its connections to the broader fashion world, as well as the continuing impact of local stores, companies, and designers including Nordstrom, Eddie Bauer, Eighth Generation, Filson, Luly Yang Couture, Marios, Prairie Underground, Road, Sassafras, Tommy Bahama, UNIONBAY, Utilikilts, and Zebra Club.
- Throughout the month of September, explore the greater Seattle area (just a reminder that children 14 and under are admitted free at MOHAI)
- Salute Puget Sound’s sartorial spirit with the museum’s unique style events, walking tours, lectures and more. Discover how elegance and practicality co-existed and converged in Seattle wardrobes. Celebrate the tradition of hats in Seattle’s black community, open your world to the vast diversity of shapes, sizes, and styles that exist and thrive among us, and explore compelling historical tidbits from key stories featured in MOHAI’s Seattle Style exhibit.
- Examine Seattle-based rapper Macklemore’s Air Jordan 6 Retro shoes in the Seattle Style exhibit. His Jordan’s are made with red suede and feature a shark logo on the heel – a reference to his fan base, the Shark Face Gang. Gaze at an elegant and rare Seattle Nuciano luxury handbag. Founded by creative director Joy Egbejimba, Nuciano’s signature design element is a cowrie shell. Egbejimba was born in Nigeria, where the cowrie has a powerful history as an item of adornment and currency.

BIG MOOD: A Night of Fat Fashion

This night of immersive experiences, curated by Adria Garcia and Kim Selling of Indian Summer and More Fats More Femmes, features a fashion show, pop-up market, and conversations punctuated with live performances.
Seattle Style: Fashion/Function is organized by Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) and presented by Nordstrom. The exhibit is accompanied by a companion book, Seattle Style: Fashion/Function. Edited by Clara Berg, with a foreword by internationally known Seattle-based fashion designer Luly Yang, Seattle Style unveils the complex narrative of Seattle’s vibrant clothing scene.
