Women Build Week
Hundreds of women from across King County will come together to support Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County’s 15th annual Women Build Week (April 30 – May 7). Sponsored locally by PRIME Electric, Women Build Week is an opportunity for volunteers to devote one day during the week to help Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County advance its mission of building strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.
“By volunteering during Women Build Week, you’ll not only change Habitat homeowners’ lives. You’ll change yours,” said Amy Farrier, Chief Development Officer. “You’ll join hundreds of other women leaders in this unforgettably impactful event. You’ll also revitalize your confidence to wield construction tools in a basic building skills training before heading to a build or repair site. And you’ll boost your sense of accomplishment as you network with other powerful women to help others.”
How To Volunteer
Participants in Women Build — which also welcomes men — commit to raising or donating at least $150 to Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County. After signing up at www.Habitatskc.org/WomenBuild, they may choose a date and location to volunteer Saturday through Saturday, April 30 – May 7. People may register as individuals or build teams from among work colleagues, friends, neighbors, faith communities and family members. (Youth under the age of 16 are unable to participate due to safety considerations.)
Activities before and during Women Build week include:
- Saturday, April 30: 8:45 a.m. – 4 p.m.: Home Preservation Day. Habitat for Humanity is coming to the Federal Way neighborhood to help homeowners with minor home repair projects to help preserve your home and improve the community.
- Thursday, May 5: 1 p.m., Virtual Panel: Women of Impact: Women and the Need for Affordable Housing. Habitat SKC will host a virtual panel moderated by KIRO7’s Linzi Sheldon and featuring Rep. Jessica Bateman, 22nd Legislative District. They will discuss the 2022 Legislative Session’s impact on affordable housing and its impact on women and how safe, decent and healthy housing has never been more important in supporting their stability and opportunity.
- Saturday, May 7, 8:45 a.m. – 4 p.m., Women of Impact Build (half-day building shifts available). Following a week where hundreds of local women donned hard hats and rolled up their sleeves as they volunteered to build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter for our low-income neighbors, the week wraps up with the Women of Impact Build. Following remarks from local elected officials, sponsors, Habitat leaders and homeowners, participants will learn to use tools and be able to visit information booths before once again picking up hammers and nails to work on the Habitat build site La Fortuna in Renton.
Habitat’s first Women Build event was held in 1998. Since then, all-women construction crews have helped build thousands of homes in partnership with families. Nearly 100,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered at previous National Women Build Week events.
